Fencing Gordon Park

Slim side gates, bin-access gates, front yard fencing and dog-proof boundaries for Gordon Park's compact blocks, built to measure in our Geebung workshop.

Gordon Park is one of Brisbane's smallest suburbs, and its blocks show it. Houses sit close to their side boundaries, front yards are short and the path to the backyard is often a narrow strip beside the wall. That makes fencing in Gordon Park a job of centimetres. A gate has to clear the wheelie bin, swing past the downpipe and still latch. As a fence contractor Gordon Park owners can call for small jobs, we measure every opening and build gates to fit. Fencing for Tight Side Passages and Small Yards

Most homes in Gordon Park still stand on interwar estate blocks, and newer townhouses and units have filled in between them. Space is short on both sides of the house. The side passage is where most of our work here happens: it is the route for bins, mowers, dogs and visitors.

Good fencing in Gordon Park secures that passage without making it harder to use. We build slim steel side gates made to the width of your opening, close gaps a small dog can squeeze through, and tidy up short front boundaries. We come out and measure before quoting any fencing in Gordon Park, at no cost.

Why Gordon Park Owners Choose Sureline

A small block leaves no room for a gate that is a few centimetres out. Stock gates rarely match the odd widths we find beside Gordon Park homes, where a passage might narrow at a meter box or a step. We make every gate in our own Geebung workshop to the opening we measure, so it hangs square and closes cleanly. Custom gates can be ready within 48 hours.

Small jobs are also normal for us. One side gate, a new latch or a short front run is worth our time, and we won't pass it over for a bigger job. Our installers share more than 90 years on the tools, and we explain the options in plain terms before you decide. Quotes for fencing in Gordon Park cost nothing and come in writing. That is how fencing in Gordon Park should work on a tight lot.

Gates and Fences for Gordon Park's Small Blocks

These services cover most requests for fencing in Gordon Park, where blocks are compact and every metre counts. Each option for fencing in Gordon Park is measured on site before we quote.

Slim Side Gates

The side gates Gordon Park homes need are often narrower or wider than anything sold off the shelf. We build steel-framed side passage gates to your measured opening, with hinges set so the gate folds flat against the wall. Frames can take chain wire, weld mesh or timber palings, and we fit a latch you can reach from both sides.

Best for: houses with narrow side passages

Side and pedestrian gate styles

Bin-Access and Utility Gates

Bins, mowers and wheelbarrows all travel through the same gap. Our bin-access gates are sized to clear a wheelie bin with room to spare, with a drop bolt or hold-open catch so the gate stays put while you wheel through. We can also fit a separate small pedestrian gate beside a wider service gate.

Best for: side yards used for bins and storage

See gate frames and hardware

Front Yard Fencing

Short front yards need a boundary that keeps kids and dogs off the street without crowding the house. Our front yard fencing uses low chain wire or steel-framed panels with a black, galvanised or PVC coating, with pedestrian gates at the path. Where a front fence sits on a retaining wall, we'll check the combined height at the measure.

Best for: small front yards and corner blocks

Chain wire for front boundaries

Dog-Proof Fencing for Small Yards

In a small yard, a dog spends its day along the fence line, testing every gap. Our dog-proof fencing brings the mesh down to ground level, runs a rail or tensioned wire along the base and closes the space under and beside gates. For dogs that dig, we can add a concrete strip along the base.

Best for: families with dogs on compact blocks

Mesh and rail options for pets

Fixing Worn Gates and Fences

Side gates on small blocks take a hammering from bins and daily traffic. Our fence repairs Gordon Park owners book most often cover dropped gates, worn hinges, latches that no longer line up and slack mesh. Posts get checked before anything else, then we fix or rebuild the gate so it closes properly again.

Best for: owners, landlords and townhouse residents

Local context

Gordon Park covers about 1.2 square kilometres and held 1,959 private dwellings at the 2021 Census. About a third of homes are flats and another 11.3% are townhouses, built among mostly interwar houses. The original estates were cut into hundreds of allotments, and that tight subdivision still sets the width of many side passages today.

Common challenges

Narrow passages leave little room for a gate to open, and bins, meter boxes and downpipes crowd what space there is. Short front yards sit close to the footpath. Kedron Brook runs along the suburb's east and south edges, and the February 2022 flood destroyed sections of its bikeway.

Why it matters

A gate that catches on a bin gets propped open, and a propped gate lets the dog out. On a small yard, one weak point is often the only one that matters.

Our approach

On fencing in Gordon Park jobs we measure the passage at several points, note what has to pass through and build the gate around that. We pair it with chain wire fencing Gordon Park owners can mend a bay at a time. Blocks backing onto the brook parkland get a quick check of post footings at the measure. You end up with fencing in Gordon Park sized to the gap you actually have.

Side Gate and Small Yard Fixes in Gordon Park

Most callouts for fencing in Gordon Park land in one of three groups. Nearly all of them come back to tight space beside the house. A quick look usually shows whether your fencing in Gordon Park needs a repair or a new gate.

"The bin won't fit through the side gate"

Many side gates were fitted to an old bin size or squeezed in beside a meter box, so the clear opening is narrower than it looks.

If the bin catches every week, the gate gets left open or the latch gets forced, and the passage stops being secure.

We measure the clear width and the swing space, then build a wider gate or a pair that folds back against the wall. Signs to watch for: scraped posts, a bent latch and a gate that is always open.

Wider and double gate options

"Our small dog squeezes out beside the gate"

Gaps between the gate and post, under the gate or at the end of a mesh run are often wide enough for a small dog.

In a compact yard the dog finds the gap fast, and the street is only a few metres away.

We close hinge and latch gaps, lower the gate, add a bottom rail and carry the mesh down to ground level along the full run.

Pet-proof mesh details

"The gate hits the wall before it opens fully"

A gate hung the wrong way, a hinge set too far out or a narrowing passage stops the gate short of a full swing.

A half-open gate blocks the path for mowers and wheelbarrows, and the hinges wear fast from being forced.

We rehang the gate with a different swing, reposition the hinges or build a narrower gate in our Geebung workshop. New custom gates can be ready in 48 hours.

Can you make a side gate for a very narrow Gordon Park passage?

Yes. Narrow passages are common on Gordon Park's interwar blocks, and we build each side gate in our Geebung workshop to the width we measure. We check how the gate will swing past downpipes, meter boxes and steps, and set the hinges so it opens as far as the space allows. For fencing in Gordon Park, a gate made to size almost always works better than a cut-down stock gate.

What is the best way to dog-proof a small yard?

Start with the gaps. Many escapes happen under or beside gates, or where mesh stops short of the ground. We fit bottom rails, bring mesh down to ground level and tighten gate clearances. For diggers, a concrete strip along the base helps. Chain wire suits small yards because it is easy to repair in short sections.

Can I install a short run myself?

Yes, if you're handy. Our Geebung outlet sells DIY fencing kits, mesh, posts, rails, fittings and gate frames, and the same team that installs our fences gives the advice. A short front boundary or side run is a reasonable DIY job. Chain wire fence kits can often be made to order within 48 hours. If the job grows, we can take over the install.

Is council approval needed for a front fence in Gordon Park?

Usually not. Approval kicks in when the fence rises above 2 metres from natural ground, and Council counts any retaining wall or screen underneath in that height. It also applies if the fence is part of a regulated pool barrier. Overlays may add conditions, so it is worth searching your address in City Plan. We point out anything odd when we measure for fencing in Gordon Park.

What will fencing in Gordon Park cost me?

Cost follows the details: metres of fence, height, mesh type, coating, how many gates and how easy the site is to reach. Custom side and bin-access gates are priced to their size and hardware. We never guess a price over the phone. After a free visit you get an itemised quote in writing, so you can weigh up options before committing.

How soon can you fit a new side gate?

It depends on the job and how busy our crews are. Because we make gates in our own Geebung workshop, we can have a custom gate ready in 48 hours once the opening is measured. Larger jobs that include new runs or front fencing take longer to plan. Ring (07) 3865 8100 and we'll give you a date we can stick to.

From General Gordon to Today's Side Gates

Gordon Park is named after General Charles Gordon, killed at Khartoum in 1885, and Khartoum Street and Gordon Street carry the link. The Gordon Estate at Lutwyche auctioned 264 blocks in 1886, and the Gordon Park Estate offered 1,063 allotments in 1890. More estate auctions followed from 1920 to 1924, and the area grew mainly as an interwar suburb. A tram branch ran through from 1940 until buses replaced it in 1969. Gordon Park lost its suburb status in 1975 and was reinstated in 1992. Our fencing in Gordon Park is built and dispatched from Geebung.
