Local context
Gordon Park covers about 1.2 square kilometres and held 1,959 private dwellings at the 2021 Census. About a third of homes are flats and another 11.3% are townhouses, built among mostly interwar houses. The original estates were cut into hundreds of allotments, and that tight subdivision still sets the width of many side passages today.
Common challenges
Narrow passages leave little room for a gate to open, and bins, meter boxes and downpipes crowd what space there is. Short front yards sit close to the footpath. Kedron Brook runs along the suburb's east and south edges, and the February 2022 flood destroyed sections of its bikeway.
Why it matters
A gate that catches on a bin gets propped open, and a propped gate lets the dog out. On a small yard, one weak point is often the only one that matters.
Our approach
On fencing in Gordon Park jobs we measure the passage at several points, note what has to pass through and build the gate around that. We pair it with chain wire fencing Gordon Park owners can mend a bay at a time. Blocks backing onto the brook parkland get a quick check of post footings at the measure. You end up with fencing in Gordon Park sized to the gap you actually have.
