Fencing McDowall

Dog-proof chain wire yards, gates and repairs for McDowall family homes that back onto Cabbage Tree Creek and the Chermside Hills bushland.

McDowall is a suburb of family houses with koala country at the back fence. That makes fencing in McDowall a question of two jobs at once: keep the dog in the yard, and keep wildlife moving safely past it. Sureline has been making mesh fences and steel gates for Brisbane homes since 1996, out of a Geebung workshop a short drive from here. We measure on site, quote for free and build gates to fit your opening. Ask for a free site visit for fencing in McDowall and we'll plan a yard that works for pets and neighbours alike.

Backyards for Dogs, Kids and Creek-Side Neighbours

Nearly nine in ten McDowall homes are separate houses, and most have a backyard where a dog spends its day. The fence has to stop that dog slipping out, and it has to be sensible for the wallabies, echidnas and koalas living in the reserves nearby. Good fencing in McDowall covers both.

We build pet containment fencing with tensioned mesh, a firm bottom edge and gates that swing shut. Where yards meet a creek or reserve, we keep the line open and plain, with no sharp top wire. Fencing in McDowall is quoted in writing after a free measure, and you can see chain wire fencing samples at our Geebung yard first.

Why McDowall Families Call Sureline

Most McDowall homes went up between the 1970s and the 2000s, around the state school on Rode Road and the streets south of Hamilton Road. Many of those original fences have now done their time. Owners call us when a dog finds the weak spot, a neighbour asks about a shared boundary or a storm drops a branch across the mesh.

As a fence contractor McDowall families can reach quickly, we come out, measure and explain the options in plain terms. Our workshop in Geebung builds gates, frames and fittings, so a replacement gate can be made to size with a 48-hour turnaround. We also take on the one-panel repair or loose latch that bigger outfits turn down. The team brings more than 90 years of combined experience to fencing in McDowall, and each quote for fencing in McDowall lists every item.

Fencing Services for McDowall Homes

These services cover the fencing in McDowall that households ask for most: secure backyards, shared boundaries and gates that close every time. Parts for fencing in McDowall come from our own Geebung workshop and outlet.

Dog-Proof Backyard Fencing

A dog that digs or pushes at the mesh needs a fence built for it. Our dog-proof fencing uses posts set in concrete, mesh tensioned tight, and a rail along the base or a tensioned bottom wire. Where digging is a habit, we can add a concrete strip along the base. Black or galvanised finishes suit most backyard fencing jobs.

Best for: families with dogs, especially near reserve edges

Chain wire options

Creek and Reserve Boundaries

Blocks that back onto Cabbage Tree Creek or the Chermside Hills reserves need a fence that sits well on softer, damp ground. We dig footings to suit the soil and keep the line clear of drainage paths. Wildlife-friendly fencing here means plain mesh, a smooth top rail and no barbed strand.

Best for: homes beside creek corridors and bushland

Pedestrian and Side Gates

Side gates are where most dogs get out. We build pedestrian gates on steel frames in our workshop, sized to the opening, and hang them with self-closing hinges and latches that catch cleanly. Frames can also carry timber palings to suit a paling fence next door.

Best for: side passages and front yards

Fence and Gate Repairs

A branch across the mesh, a leaning post or a gate that no longer latches can turn into an escaped pet overnight. Our fence repairs McDowall owners book include new posts, re-tensioned mesh, patched panels and rehung gates. We check what caused the failure so the fix lasts.

Best for: storm damage and worn older fences

Supplies and DIY Kits

Some owners prefer to run a short section themselves. Our Geebung outlet sells the fencing supplies McDowall DIYers need: mesh rolls, posts, rails, hardware and complete kits. Chain wire kits are often ready within 48 hours of ordering, and our installers are on hand with advice.

Best for: handy owners and trade buyers

Fencing in McDowall: Local Factors

  • 87.7% separate houses Source: ABS 2021 Census QuickStats, McDowall
  • 40.3% paying off a mortgage Source: ABS 2021 Census QuickStats, McDowall

Local context

McDowall had 7,612 residents at the 2021 Census, living mostly in detached family homes. Cabbage Tree Creek runs through the suburb, lined by linear reserves. Raven Street Reserve at 815 Rode Road forms part of the 129 ha Chermside Hills Reserves, home to wallabies, echidnas, gliders and koalas. A 2018 Council survey found "significant koala activity along Cabbage Tree Creek near Beckett Rd", as reported by Echo News.

Common challenges

Pets and wildlife share the same backyards here. Dogs left out at night can meet a koala or wallaby crossing the lawn. Older fences often have gaps under the mesh, side gates that no longer latch and posts that have loosened in creek-side soil after heavy rain.

Why it matters

A secure yard protects your dog from roads and protects local wildlife from your dog. A shared dividing fence also involves your neighbour, since adjoining Queensland owners normally split what a sufficient fence costs.

Our approach

Each job for fencing in McDowall begins with questions at the free measure about pets, gates and what sits behind the back fence. Next we set footings to suit the ground and recommend plain, well-tensioned chain wire fencing McDowall families can rely on. Good fencing in McDowall should keep pets in without hurting the animals outside.

Fencing in McDowall: Problems We See and Fix

Three issues come up again and again with fencing in McDowall. A quick look on site usually tells us whether a repair or a new run is the better call for your fencing in McDowall.

"Our dog gets out at night and we worry about the koalas"

Mesh that stops short of the ground, a slack bottom edge or a side gate left ajar gives a dog a way out after dark.

A loose dog can be hit on Rode Road or Beckett Road, and dogs are a known danger to koalas and wallabies that move through yards near the creek.

We close the gap with a ground-level rail or taut wire, bring the mesh down to ground level and fit self-closing hinges and a firm latch. Signs to watch for: lifted mesh, dug soil and a gate that doesn't click shut.

Mesh fencing details

"The posts near the creek have started to lean"

Posts set shallow in damp or soft ground near a waterway can shift after long wet spells, and Brisbane's wettest months run from December to March.

Once a post leans, the mesh slackens, gaps open underneath and a pet can slip out.

We reset or replace the post in deeper concrete footings, re-tension the run and check the neighbouring posts before we leave.

Post and fence repairs

"Our neighbour wants to replace the back fence"

Fences built in the same street at the same time tend to wear out together, so neighbours start the conversation at once.

Under Queensland's Neighbourhood Disputes (Dividing Fences and Trees) Act 2011, the cost of a sufficient dividing fence is split evenly, and a formal notice starts things off when owners disagree.

One itemised quote and specification goes to both households, pet-safe base included, so the discussion starts from the same facts.

What fence suits a McDowall yard that backs onto bushland?

Plain chain wire in a black or galvanised finish is a practical choice for fencing in McDowall beside reserves or the creek. It keeps the view open, lets water flow through and holds pets in. We use a smooth top rail and skip barbed or sharp top strands on home boundaries, since those can catch wildlife. Posts go in concrete footings sized to the ground.

How do I stop my dog digging under the fence?

Start with the base. We bring the mesh close to the ground and add a bottom rail or tension wire so it can't be lifted. For persistent diggers, a concrete strip along the fence line stops tunnelling. Check the side gate as well, since a gap under a gate is a common escape route. We look at all of this during the free measure.

Can you fence a yard near Cabbage Tree Creek?

Yes. Blocks near the creek often have softer or damp soil, so we size footings to suit and keep the fence clear of drainage paths. Brisbane City Council has flood mapping for Cabbage Tree Creek, and overlays can add requirements, so look your lot up in City Plan. Anything we spot while measuring for fencing in McDowall, we'll point out.

Will Council need to approve my fence?

Most backyard fences don't need it. Approval is triggered when fence, screen and any retaining wall under it add up to more than 2 metres above natural ground, or when the fence is part of a regulated pool barrier. Overlays and neighbourhood plans can bring extra conditions, so look up your address in City Plan. A typical McDowall back fence sits well below that 2 metre line.

What will fencing in McDowall cost?

The price moves with run length, height and finish, how many gates you want and how wide they are, the soil, and any old fence to pull out. A dig-proof base or an extra side gate adds to it. We come out at no charge, measure, then email an itemised quote so you can weigh it against others line by line.

How soon can you start?

Start dates hinge on how big the job is and how busy the crew is that month. Geebung is a short trip away, so fitting in a site visit is rarely hard. If a broken gate is the urgent part, a custom replacement has a 48-hour turnaround. Ring (07) 3865 8100 and we'll give you an honest date.

About Sureline and McDowall

McDowall is named for McDowall State School, which opened on 28 January 1975 and honours Colonel John McDowall, an early farmer in neighbouring Everton Park. Council first proposed the name "Annand", but residents wanted the school's name, and the Place Names Board accepted McDowall in 1975. Early housing went up north-west of Hamilton and Trouts roads from the 1960s, and part of that area later became Chermside Hills reserve. Most growth then came south of Hamilton Road. Northside Christian College opened in 1985, and residents numbered 1,524 in 1976 and 7,612 by 2021. Our Geebung crew handles fencing in McDowall today, and quotes for fencing in McDowall cost nothing.
